Shawn Ryan - Costume Designer

Shawn Ryan has been making costumes for theater, film, and special events for over 15 years. He attended school for fashion design but has also been self taught via his own research and creative experimentation in the world of costume. Shawn is the head costume designer for Penguin Point Productions in Oviedo Florida, and also works alongside PattyCake Productions on YouTube to create some of their costumes. He works seasonally at Universal Studios Florida in wardrobe for Halloween Horror Nights, Grinchmas, and Mardi Gras. Among his theater credits are Chicago, The Producers, Into The Woods, Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, Hello, Dolly!, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Shawn interned with Susan Hilferty on the workshop of Broadway’s Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure. (Hilferty is the Tony and Drama Desk Award winner for best/outstanding costume design for Broadway’s Wicked.) In 2017, he recreated Ozma’s costume from Disney’s Return To Oz for original Ozma actress Emma Ridley. For exhibition at 2017’s International Wizard of Oz Club national convention, Shawn recreated eleven classic Dorothy Gale costumes, starting with her original illustration and cataloguing every major production of Oz from stage, film, cartoon, theme park, and even ice shows. In 2022, he recreated the same exhibit for the Wicked Witch of the West for The All Things Oz Museum’s Ozstravaganza festival in Chittenango, NY. The All Things Oz Museum is the permanent home of various costume replicas, including Glinda the Good Witch of the North, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the ruby slippers as seen in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz. Shawn also serves as the coordinator of costume and makeup for Ozstravaganza’s annual Wizard of Oz festival.
